Fun Facts at Sharc — Nerdy Quotations
March 2, 2023 @ Campus
Stefan is describing his experience of attending HPCA 2023 and highlighting how good the shrimp, salmon, and crabs were and how he liked them.
Stefan: “The counter was for recruiters to market their companies but I just wanted to quietly eat.”
Akshay, overhearing the conversation: “So you only cared about the crab, not the crap.” 🤣

Callie and Hanqiu are brainstorming ideas for projects to pursue next. Callie mentions Bayes network and stuff regarding uncertainty. She then goes on to talk about the really fancy ideas she has in mind. After she’s done explaining, Callie curiously looks at Hanqiu, excited, asking: “What do you think?”
Hanqiu, listening to all that Callie said about uncertainty, stands there next to a whiteboard, calm, composed, and innocently blurts out: “Your ideas have a lot of uncertainty“. 😂

Sharc Lab dinner. Someone took out rice from the delivery box shaped as a cube. Stefan said (calmly): “It’s block partitioned“.
The same Sharc Lab dinner. We ordered too much food and Jianming offered to heat up some of them at another microwave machine. Someone said: “It’s multi-core and distributed computing“. Some said: “It’s called offloading some tasks to GPU“. After a while, our heating was finished but Jianming hasn’t been back yet. We concluded: “It’s because the communication overhead is too large” (the other microwave machine is far away).

Sharc Lab dinner. After a large meal, Callie mumbled: “hope I have two stomachs.” Akshay didn’t get it and asked Callie to repeat. After the second time, Akshay looked extremely enlightened and said (excitingly): “Ohhh! So ping pong buffer!“

Akshay holding a huge bottle of zero-sugar soda for Callie and expressed concerns about getting too much soda, but Callie didn’t care since it’s zero-sugar. Akshay didn’t give up: “You know zero-sugar and zero-calorie on the label doesn’t really mean zero; as long as it’s below a threshold they can claim zero.” Looking at Callie’s indifferent face, he emphasized: “There’s a quantization error! It can be accumulated!” This is a really good practice before the submission deadline.

Sharc Lab meeting with Stefan and Rishov. Stefan was trying to explain the adversary attack on INR (Implicit Neural Representation). Rishov goes: “Here, hold my INR, and I’ll ….”.
If in the future Rishov is not responding to his email/slack, he is probably too busy holding Stefan’s INR.

Rishov told Akshay about our new “agile development” branding. Akshay commented: “If we make some hardware that doesn’t work correctly, we can call it fragile development“. What a brilliant idea!
